In 1997, before Under The Western Freeway was released, I went to see Helium, Sparklehorse, and Grandaddy at the Euclid Tavern. I had never heard of the openers, Grandaddy, but I was totally in awe, feeling as if I was witnessing something special. They were jammed on the Euclid Tavern’s tiny stage, synth sounds swirling out from their speakers, clashing with Jason Lytle’s electric, colorful melodies.
Later that night, I hung out with Grandaddy in their van, driving around listening to music and smoking weed. I wanted their CD, but I only had $5. I also had a bag of weed, maybe half an 1/8th. I handed them the cash and the baggy, and received a copy of Under The Western Freeway. This is a great album.
